"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1
Take a moment to stop and listen to the world around you. What do you hear?
Maybe someone talking in the background, or a coffee pot brewing? Maybe it's the bustle of traffic during your morning commute, or maybe it's the rustle of children waking up in the morning?
What noises fill your mind throughout the day?
For me, I am always listening to music, and the wonderful technology of earbuds allows me to listen to music 24/7. Even with the joy that it brings, it can also become a distraction for me.
It allows me to drown out whatever emotions or troubles that I may be facing. In a way, it's my safe-space - a distraction from the troubles of my life.
But, it also is a distraction from hearing the voice of God.
One thing that I have learned is that God more often speaks in a still, small voice. That Voice can often be drowned out by the distractions that we allow in our lives.
So, that might lead you to the question, "How do I hear the voice of God?"
I use to think that I would hear an audible voice whispering or speaking in my ear, but that's not always the case.
God is capable of speaking to you in any way that He wishes. He's God after all, but I've learned that God speaks to most through directing thoughts in ways that some wouldn't normally think. Best way to describe it is a "gentle tap on the heart."
That leads to another question, "How do I know that it's not my own thoughts?"
You won't know until you seek God about it. Take whatever thought, idea, or nudging that you think may be God and write in down. Then take it to God in prayer and ask Him for His will to be done. Continually take it to Him and ask Him for guidance.
If it's God's will, then you'll eventually see the steps and work unfolding before your eyes. Then, that's how you will know that God spoke to you.
Through seeing this, you grow your faith and begin to recognize the Voice of God even easier. You'll begin to trust Him more too.
To grow, we need to remove the unnecessary distractions from our lives. These distractions prevent us from hearing the Voice of God, and we miss out on opportunities for God to use us.
Removing the unnecessary noise allows for the whispers to be heard. It gives us the opportunities to grow, and become more sensitive to recognizing God's Voice when the noise is unpreventable.
